A few weeks ago I decided it was time to overhaul my skincare regime. I’ll be honest, I didn’t really know where to start with it all. I had seen a lot of influencers on Instagram rave about ‘The Ordinary’ range, typically their AHA & BH peeling solution, hyaluronic acid and Retinol products.

I would categorise my skin as dry to very dry and sensitive. I have always suffered badly with eczema and dry skin and introducing new products to my limited skin care regime is always a bit of a risk. However, considering the reviews for ‘The Ordinary’ and the dramatic benefits a lot of people have reported I decided it was my time to check it out for myself.

I had a look at their products on the Boots website and purchased the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, Retinol 0.5% in Squalane and their Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA.

The hyaluronic acid was number one on my ‘to buy’ list. I have used a couple of hyaluronic acid products in the past from a few different brands so I was already aware of the benefits of using this in caring for my dry skin.

Hyaluronic Acid is a great addition especially for those with dry skin. It is great for locking moisture into your skin guaranteeing that you’ll get to the end of the day without those pesky flakes resurfacing!

I pat a few drops of this all over my face while my skin is still damp (not wet) from the shower and it ensures lots of moisture is retained in my skin.

I definitely wasn’t disappointed in this product. It has exceeded my expectations and has kept my dry skin at bay while using it in conjunction with the other products!

Retinol was a bit of a scary purchase for me, especially with having such sensitive skin, I worried it would set my face on fire. However, my fear of having wrinkles by 26 made me take the plunge!

After a quick google before purchasing I found out Retinol is key in increasing the firmness of your skin, helping to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

As my skin is so dry it can give the appearance of fine lines so I decided this was a key purchase in helping to lessen them.

I definitely need to note that Retinol can be quite drying and because of this I put a couple of drops of Hyaluronic Acid on before using the Retinol just to mitigate against any added dryness.

After reading some reviews on this I was expecting a bit of a nippy feeling after applying, however I didn’t feel anything like that. Instead, it felt quite soothing and I think this product has made the biggest difference in my skin. It has resulted in my skin becoming more glowy and dewy and has had a massive impact on smoothing out my skin surface. I will definitely be repurchasing this!

This moisturiser was a bit of a risky purchase for me to be honest, I don’t tend to trust many facial moisturisers because a lot of them appear to just sit on the surface of my skin and then evaporate leaving me with even drier skin.

However, I was most impressed with this product!

I tested it as soon as it arrived and was shocked at how thick and creamy it was but still so light! It soaked right into my skin to the deeper layer and the effects lasted until I washed my face later that night.

Cliché but a little of this product goes a long way! I use about a pea-sized amount twice a day and it’s moisturising effects last all day without me needing to reapply. I have noticed as well, that this is a great moisturiser to wear under your make-up, resulting in no flakiness and smooth foundation application!

Final Thoughts

My ‘The Ordinary’ Eczema Skin Saviours
Check out The Ordinary at Boots.com

It has been 4 weeks now since I started using this trio and WHAT. A. DIFFERENCE. Even on my zoom calls with work my colleagues have commented on how much glowier my skin looks. I have noticed such an astounding difference in my skin.

When I started using the products I had a few red areas from my eczema and a very stubborn area of dry skin by my right temple and this has all gone. The redness calmed down within the first week of using these products and I have only had a couple of dry skin days, but chances are this was due to not drinking enough water.

Final thoughts are that I would definitely recommend these products. I am so pleased with the difference they have made in my skin and every time I look in the mirror I am so impressed with how much brighter my face looks! I am definitely going to repurchase these items and I will be trying out a couple more products from The Ordinary. I already have my eye on their Caffeine Solution and I am desperate to try the AHA + BH peeling solution when it comes back into stock!

Would you recommend anything from The Ordinary? Or do you have any other skincare saviours I should try on my skincare journey?!

  1. I absolutely love The Ordinary! I also have my eye on the caffeine solution (and a few others) which I will probably order soon! x

    • Me too! I’m so glad I tried them out, I can’t wait to make my next order 🙂 x

Have you tried using The Ordinary AHA BHA Peeling Solution? I suffer from eczema too would you recommend using it for eczema and sensitive prone skin

      • Hey! I’ve actually still not tried it out. If you’re going through a flare currently I would wait it out until your skin has calmed as the ingredients could irritate your skin more and then maybe try it when its calmed again. Good luck! xx

Thanks for the post! This is my exact worry and I really want to find products that work for me so the Ordinary have always seemed like a holy grail I can’t access! Lol. I have eczema on my arms and wrists too and have always wondered whether facial products would help. Do you think these products are gentle enough to be used for the face, arms, and wrists?

          • Thank you so much for your comment. Apologies for taking a while to get back to you! I personally wouldn’t recommend them for other parts of your body but only because there are other products that may work better. For example, I love Weleda skin food and have used this both on my face and on other parts of my body that have flared and it definitely helped. Also, Balmonds skin salvation would be great for your wrists as it is lovely and thick and will provide lots of moisture! I hope this helps 🙂 and thank you for reading! x

Have you tried the Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% product by any chance? I would love to hear your thoughts about it!
As a fellow eczema sufferer, your blog post was just what I needed to jump on “The Ordinary” train- Very excited to purchase these products now 🙂

    • Hello! I’m so glad you’ve found this post helpful. I hope that The Ordinary products can help you! I haven’t yet tried the Niacinamide and Zinc from their range but I have used Zinc on it’s own in the past and found it helped a lot.
Thank you for your comment! xx

  4. Kathy

I suffer from eczema on my eyelids and have found the Squalane Cleanser and the Natural Moisturising Factors + HA the only products that keep it under control. I slather the cleanser and moisturiser over my whole face – including my eyelids. They are the only products I have ever found to work and they do not irritate my eyes.

    • Hi Kathy!

Thank you for your comment. Eczema on the eyes is the worst! I get that too. I’m glad you found relief with those products. I still need to try the Squalane Cleanser.

      Lucy xx

  5. Plaksha

Hey I have medium-severe eczema prone skin and was wondering that do you think The Ordinary products will suit all eczema skin-types?

    • Hi Plaksha!

My eczema is severe too and The Ordinary products were gentle on my skin and I did notice improvements. Not all skin and types of eczema are the same though so it might be a case of trial and error 🙂 I’m going to bring out more content soon covering different brands. So if you don’t see an improvement with these products there may be others that will suit you more.

      Lucy xx
